Most visible repairs fail for one of three reasons: the damaged board was never cut back to solid material, the patch was built up proud of the wall instead of feathered out, or the surrounding texture was never matched. All three are avoidable.

We cut back to sound board, back the opening properly, tape the seams like any other joint, and feather the compound far enough past the repair that light passes over it without catching an edge.

Settlement cracks over doors and windows, nail pops through a first winter, ceiling stains after a roof or plumbing leak, holes from door handles and furniture, damage left behind by electricians and plumbers, and corners chewed up by moving day.

Where water was involved, we make sure the source is dealt with and the area is dry before we close it up. Repairing over a live leak just hides the problem for a season.

Blending is the real skill. Knockdown, orange peel, stipple and hand-troweled surfaces all need a matched technique, and an older smooth wall often needs a wider skim than the hole suggests so the repair reads as flat.

If a match isn't realistically achievable — often the case with old sprayed ceilings — we'll say so and offer the alternative, usually skimming the full surface for a clean, consistent result.
